Pilots at American Airlines voted to authorise strike action in a move that applies more pressure on the largest US carrier as it negotiates a new contract with workers.

The Allied Pilots Association, which represents about 15,000 AA pilots, said on Monday that more than 96 per cent of its members took part in a strike authorisation vote, and more than 99 per cent of that group voted in favour.

The results do not mean industrial action is imminent, as federal laws make it difficult for airline unions to go on strike. The APA said, though, that picketing would take place on Monday for two hours at 10 US airports.

AA acknowledged the vote as an “important” part of the process surrounding a pay deal.

“We remain confident that an agreement for our pilots is within reach and can be finalised quickly,” the company said in an emailed statement to the Financial Times.
